EMN Fellow Matthew Hoh talks the Afghanistan War and more on the Curious Man’s Podcast:
This is one of the first lessons that I’ll talk about with people about war and morality and our own individual agency is that no matter how moral you think you’re going to be…that morality is going to be crushed by the overall immorality of the war and…your individual agency will just be sucked up by the great agency of the war itself.
Most people join because…they think they’re going to be doing something good.
This is why you have such high suicide rates among veterans, right, because you put these young men and women in these positions where they think they’re going to be heroes.
They’re taught and they’re trained that they’re doing the right thing and then they get over there and then… for the most part they thrive, and we give them amazing responsibilities, we train them, we invest millions of dollars into them and we have them go overseas to kill people.
What a tragedy this is.
