There is still time to stop war in the Middle East.
The White House has the ability, primarily through the enormous leverage of military aid provided to Israel, to force Israel to cease its wars in Palestine and Lebanon and to not escalate with Iran.
For nearly a year now, experts have understood where the United States’ unconditional support for Israel would lead. We seem to be reaching the climax of those concerns. However, more war is not inevitable. Stability and security in the region are possible if the White House forgoes its domestic political fears of a war-mongering political media class and the Israel lobby in the US.
History is full of wars that never were because leaders understood their power, respected the risks involved and understood the consequences. President Biden still has the chance to turn a likely regional war in the Middle East into a war that never came to be.
