“The death toll in Gaza is staggering. 13,000 civilians in Gaza have been killed; a number that will continue to grow with with sustained daily targeting of schools, hospitals, places of worship and other designated protected areas. Israel’s campaign of ethnic cleansing and apparent genocide is dependent on the United States.
Rather than utilizing our relationship with Israel to demand they conduct a hostage exchange and begin good faith negotiations to end the blockade and occupation of Palestine – moves that would undercut any popular support for Hamas – the Biden Administration spent the last six weeks aiding and abetting what more and more people and major institutions around the world are decrying as a genocide.
It is not just a crime against humanity and the abrogation of international, federal and moral laws. It is a foolhardy and dangerous decades-long commitment to accompany Israel with its war policies, including the illegal occupation of Palestinian land.
This escalation of Israel’s occupation forms the wellspring for violent and extreme resistance to Israeli control and fuels a geopolitical chess match that makes likely, among other dangerous developments, the acquisition of nuclear weapons by Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and potentially Egypt. None of this is in the geopolitical interest of the United States. We can only find the answer to this support for slaughter in the same crackpot ideologies, cynical domestic political calculations and war profiteering that dominated the bipartisan madness of the Global War on Terror. The results will be the same.”
