I learned in real-time as a U.S. Air Force Arabic linguist how U.S. foreign policy harms the Arab people: Washington’s arms sales and “unbreakable” diplomatic support encourages Israeli leadership to behave wantonly. We see this still today. Stressing “ironclad” and “resolute” support, the Pentagon rushes weaponry to Israel and encourages U.S. industry to expedite direct commercial sales. The Secretary of State, meanwhile, flies to Israel and reportedly prevents his personnel from speaking of ceasefire and de-escalation. An end to such unconditional support can produce détente, compromise, and a diplomatic resolution.
